The one thing I truly wish I had started doing earlier in my life is going to therapy.
Growing up in the 90’s in a latino household means I was taught that girls were expected to act a certain way. Us ladies were meant to be sweet, delicate, quiet, attentive, responsible and caring. Only good grades were acceptable in my house and God forbid if I were to get in trouble for any sort of misconduct. I basically grew up fearing my parents and caregivers. I did not feel comfortable to open up and talk to them about certain topics. As a teenager I was not allowed to do most of the things other girls were doing and I had to lie to get my way around when I was in college.
All the over protection, the pressure to always be good and “perfect” and the fear of upsetting others turned me into a people pleaser. I never learned to set healthy boundaries in my relationships. I confused intensity, jealousy and being needed with love. Making uncomfortable decisions was and still is incredibly hard for me. I’ve been in therapy for several years now and I still struggle…
